Springbok Squad Post-2027 Rugby World Cup

By Hans Dürr

The Springboks have been called an ageing team, and Rassie Erasmus has been working hard to build the depth of the Springbok squad. We take a look at what a post-2027 Rugby World Cup Springbok squad might look like.

Even though all the older players will not retire at the same time, we decided not to look at players of about 33 years and older. This is what we came up with as a possible 23-man squad:

Possible 23-man squad

  • 1. Ox Nche
  • 2. Johan Grobbelaar
  • 3. Wilco Louw
  • 4. RG Snyman
  • 5. Ruan Nortje
  • 6. Paul de Villiers
  • 7. Cameron Hanekom
  • 8. Jasper Wiese
  • 9. Morne vd Berg
  • 10. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu
  • 11. Ethan Hooker
  • 12. Damian Willemse
  • 13. Canaan Moodie
  • 14. Kurt-Lee Arendse
  • 15. Quan Horn
  • 16. Gerhard Steenekamp
  • 17. Jan-Hendrik Wessels
  • 18. Grant Williams
  • 19. Thomas du Toit
  • 20. Manie Libbok
  • 21. Riley Norton
  • 22. Ruben van Heerden
  • 23. Siba Mahashe

Other players like Zachary Porthen, Carlu Sadie, Cobus Wiese, Ruan Venter, Esethu Mnebelele, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Nthutuko Mchunu and Batho Hlekani might also be part of Rassie's plans.

We are concerned about the lock position. Players like JJ van der Mescht, JF van Heerden and Reinhardt Ludwig could feature, but we really hope that a young prodigy bursts onto the scene at No. 4 or No. 5.

Many other backline stars might also feature soon. Jaco Williams, Cheswill Jooste, Vusi Moyo, Yaqeen Ahmed, Hasheem Pead, Ethan Adams, Markus Muller, Zekhetelo Siyaya, Aphelele Fassi and Luan Giliomee are notable mentions.
